Shipyard Park
Water Street
|
| Shipyard Park is a
memorial to the town’s strong shipbuilding legacy. Josiah Holmes founded
his shipyard at this site in 1812 and together with two other
Mattapoisett yards, produced an astounding 47 ships during eight of the
busiest years around the mid-1800s. Take note of the park’s flagpole,
which is the mizzenmast from the
Wanderer,
the last whaling ship built in Mattapoisett in 1878. |
