Cape Cod's sandy beaches are left behind at Roland C. Nickerson State Park, where wilderness sets the pace and beach towels are replaced by hiking boats. The 1,900-acre park has several freshwater kettle ponds stocked with fish year-round, hiking trails, more than 400 camping sites and access to the Cape Cod Rail Trail bike path.

Addie Nickerson gave the state the park land in 1934 to honor her husband Roland. In their 20 years on the land, the Nickersons and their children lived large in Fieldstone Hall, which had its own 9-hole golf course. It burnt down in May 1906, a stress believed to have accelerated Roland Nickerson’s health problems. He died two weeks later.

Addie’s wealthy father-in-law set about building her a new even bigger house near the water and restored the carriage house. The 16-room mansion was magnificently completed in 1912, with marble fireplaces, Italian wood interior and an iron cage elevator.

The Nickerson family owned the mansion until 1945 when it was sold to the La Salette religious order. Corcoran Jennison purchased the estate in 1980 and opened the Ocean Edge Resort in 1986. The mansion and carriage house are now used for meeting space and are visible to drivers from Rte. 6A.
