Sandwich

Incorporated in 1637, Sandwich is Cape Cod's oldest town and has the architecture and museums to show it, along with the beauty of the Cape Cod Canal, beaches and salt marshes.

Sandwich was settled by Edmond Freeman and nine other men from Saugus and named after the England community where many of its residents originated. It began as an agricultural village that sent timber wood back to England, but expanded with glassmaker Deming Jarves’ arrival in 1825. The glass era defined Sandwich throughout the 19th century, with Jarves’ Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. employing 500 workers at its height.
