Visitors with valid rental contracts can purchase three-day, one-week, two-week or seasonal beach passes at the Beach Sticker Booth on the Town Pier on Thurs., Fri. and Sat. in the summer. Whether you swim or not, Mayo Beach is notable for once having a lighthouse. The original beacon was erected atop a house in 1838 and was visible for 12 miles. Removed in 1881, the structure was replaced with a keeper’s house and a cast iron tower which flashed until 1922. The tower was demolished in 1939, though the privately-owned keeper’s house still stands. Wellfleet’s other lighthouse stood on Billingsgate Island, a 60-acre island in the 1600s that was reduced to a shoal in the 1940s.
