| Whether you swim or
not, Mayo Beach is notable for once having a lighthouse. The original
beacon was erected atop a house in 1838 and was visible for 12 miles.
Removed in 1881, the structure was replaced with a keeper’s house and a
cast iron tower which flashed until 1922. The tower was demolished in
1939, though the privately-owned keeper’s house still stands.
Wellfleet’s other lighthouse stood on Billingsgate Island, a 60-acre
island in the 1600s that was reduced to a shoal in the 1940s. |
