Yarmouth has many faces, from pristine
beaches ideal for strolling couples, to the motels and big tourist signs of Rte.
28, to the sea captains’ homes of yesterday that line the Old King’s Highway.
Originally called Mattacheese, Yarmouth was
settled in 1639 and started out holding a large swath of the Cape,
including present-day Dennis, Chatham, Harwich, Brewster and part of
Barnstable.
Today, the town holds the villages of
Yarmouth Port, South Yarmouth and West Yarmouth. Yarmouth Port sits north along
Cape Cod Bay and has historical houses, the Town Common and Cape Cod’s oldest
stagecoach stop. Bound by Barnstable and Rte. 28, West Yarmouth bustles with
motels and family venues like the Zooquarium, while South Yarmouth is known for
warm waters, beach cottages and Windmill Park.
