Charlestown
|
Charlestown is dominated by the Narragansett Indians
and visitors who seek tranquility from miles of
undisturbed hiking trails, wildlife preserves and
beaches.
Named for King Charles, the community is surrounded
by 1,900 acres of land belonging to the Narragansett
Indian Tribe. The Narragansetts emerged as the
dominant tribe after years of battling the Niantic
and Pequot Indians and the town’s Indian heritage
can be explored at the Royal Indian Burial Ground
and Old Fort Ninigret, believed to have been
established by Dutch traders prior to the Pilgrims’
1620 landing in Plymouth.
Visitors who come for the outdoors usually head to
the beach at Ninigret Park or Kimball Wildlife
Refuge, while Quonochontaug Beach hosts an active
summer community.
