Narragansett

Narragansett’s coastline unravels in magnificence,
bending around lighthouses, the Newport and
Jamestown bridges and splashing harbor rocks.
Part
of South Kingstown until 1901, Narragansett - where
the Indian tribe of the same name once roamed -
offers both the glitz and simplicity of the sea. A
devoted fishing fleet still heads out daily
alongside the Block Island Ferry and surfers now
ride the waves near the Towers, the lone survivors
of the grand Narragansett Pier Casino era. But the
most lavish spot was Canonchet Farm in the 1870s,
where Gov. William Sprague and his wife summered in
an opulent fashion more commonly associated with
nearby Newport.
