A Tradition as Strong as the Beach

Cape Cod Baseball Returns in June

As much as beaches and boating, Cape Cod summers mean baseball. But say goodbye to Fenway's high-priced seats. Here, there's just a baseball cap for donations after a day in the sun.

Founded in 1885, the Cape Cod Baseball League is America's oldest amateur baseball tradition, known for grooming the best professional players. Last year, one in seven Major League Baseball players were Cape Cod alumni. And each summer, more college boys leave their aluminum bats behind for wood and bunk up in local homes, hoping to earn their ticket to the big game.

Look back at the early glory as a new season starts June 15 and the Hall of Fame enjoys its fifth and final season at the Heritage Museums & Gardens in Sandwich. For next fall, the display moves to the lower level of the John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum.
