A businessman who has made a
career of buying and selling companies of
all sizes, Ted Burbank has widely shared his
expertise through books, software and
speaking engagements. Now, he shares his
passion for boating and New England in a
series of books on local history,
attractions and passed-down tales.
The 69-year-old Millis
resident began his historical research after
being sidelined by a broken ankle a few
years ago and learning his roots trace all
the way back to Pilgrims Miles Standish and
John and Priscilla Alden.
Burbank
recently released, “Pirates and Treasure in
New England,” now available through
www.NewEnglandShores.com. The
informative history reads easy with stories
about William Fly, who was hung off Nixes
Mate in Boston Harbor, and popular phrases
like “Damsel in Distress,” and reveals which
pirate shares a bloodline with U.S.
President George W. Bush. The book also
devotes attention to the pirates who died
when the Whydah
sank off Wellfleet, Mass. in 1717, leaving
behind a treasure so great it’s still being
recovered.
Burbank’s Previous Books
Burbank delved into history
writing with “A Guide to Plymouth’s Old
Burial Hill.” While researching this book,
he learned he was related to both Standish
and an A.S. Burbank, who also authored an
1895 book on the Plymouth, Mass. cemetery.
Burbank self-published his
Plymouth book through Salty Pilgrim Press
and followed it with a second title called,
“The Islands of Brant Rock and Ocean Bluff,”
about Marshfield, Mass. His third
publication, “A Frugal Yankee’s Cookbook,”
is a treasure for any fisherman, featuring
tasty recipes, fishing tips and jokes well
worth sharing.
Prior to indulging his
passion for history, Burbank published
several business titles such as, the
“Handbook of Business Valuations,” and his
DealMaker software for merger and
acquisitions through John Wiley & Sons and
Parker-Nelson Publishing. He has also
operated several businesses,
including the Burbank Group, which he sold
in 2004, and Lighthouse Financial.
Burbank and his wife of 52
years, Luella, have lived in Millis since
1962 and have three children and three
grandchildren. The former Coast Guard
Reservist was a member of the Millis
Planning Board for 10 years, serving five as
chairman.
